The beginning of the trip, Kerala

After all these amazing 3 months, working, having knowledge, a deep knowledge of the Indian culture, it was time to start my trip in the amazing India. Everything happened to me, like it supposed to be in this country, otherwise i believe this country would't be the same. I hope this blog can be useful in the future to someone. Well my first destiny was Kerala.

I left Bangalore during the night with Youni, my partner on these first weeks. The destiny was Kottayiam, and for the first time here was going to travel in a volvo bus. I was expecting a good journey, but this was my mistake. The journey was really awful. This bus was with the AC off during 15 minutes, other 15 minutes on. The noise of the AC was awful but the worst was the cold, probably for the first time here i was with cold.

Finally we arrive to Kottayiam, the goal was to get the public ferry to see the backwaters. Most of people go directly to allepey, to get a house boat. But for us was quite expensive, only for 2. So the solution was this public ferry. The ferry does big part of the track that the house boat does and we still do a part that the house boat doesn´t do, the part of the villages. There are people completely isolated in the middle of these waters that only can move in this public ferries. The truth is that the landscape is amazing but at the same time after some time the landscape starts to be always the same. I believe the backwaters are a place that you have to see, but too much overrated. And in a house boat you spend one day there! I believe if you have a big group you can have a nice experience but with only a small group, hum... After some hours i believe you want to comeback. After 3 hours we arrive to allepey, anxious to get a place to stay and sleep, we were exhausted. Allepey there is nothing to see only the point where you arrive or you leave. But I read that the food is quite nice. The truth is that i only ate there once and the food is quite nice.

On the next day we went to varkala, one of best beaches in Kerala. The trip was made by bus, in a bus where simply there weren't windows. The trip took us about 4h in a road that sometimes was right next to the sea, nice views we could see here sometimes. When we arrived to the beach was quite easy to get a place to stay and quite cheap also without even bargaining. That´s true that was low season, but anyway the price was quite cheap. The beach was small and with a nice sea. For some probably too strong, the waves here are big and with strange currents. Sometimes too much, 10 minutes there are equivalent in a normal beach to 1 hour. The current was so strong that it was impossible to remain in the same place, even in a matter of seconds.

In the next day we move to ooty, in Tamil Nadu. The goal was to travel in the old railway of the train. The mission in the beginning was very difficult. We went without tickets, and they were sold out months ago. But for our lucky they have a "special" wagon for people that show up without tickets. Unfortunately the wagon wasn't very nice, but anyway we could go on the train. The journey takes 6 hours to do 30km! The train it´s from the beginning of past century and it´s a steam train! As we were in a improvised wagon we were right next to the locomotive in the tunnels and all the steam would enter in the train, and i don't even talk about the noise... What a ride! And we had some fun due to some nice girls there. The journey is made by tunnels, old bridges, waterfalls, tea plantations and take us to about 2000m of altitude. Well Ooty is a small town, at least accordingly the standards of the Indians, well known by their teas, that is the reason why the train line was made. Also known, for our lucky, by their chocolates. Nice chocolates I ate there, I only think I should eat more.

The first week is over, it´s time to comeback to bangalore for some days and the next trip is to Agra. Regarding Kerala, it´s a nice place mainly for nature lovers. The best time to visit is after monsoons where you can see all the nature in the "maximum power". But it´s always a nice place to visit.
